We have all heard the saying, “You can’t have your cake and eat it too.” Well it turns out you can have your cake and eat it too! At least when it comes to your bridesmaid dresses for your wedding. Convertible bridesmaid dresses are all the rage for 2011.  This means that the pretty, long formal dress that you want your bridesmaids to wear, can convert into a short sassy cocktail dress that they’ll love and wear again and again.  There are lots of different ways that dresses can convert, so we’ve put together a few great ideas to use this trend.

Perhaps the easiest way to make a dress change is the have a removable skirt.  The removable skirt could be any style or length.  It could attach with a hidden zipper, or simply with an elegant tie or bow.  The skirt could be made of a different fabric, however, using the same fabric as the shorter dress underneath will make it look seamless and your wedding guests will be fascinated at the way that the dresses just seemed to change!

If you are considering a cold weather wedding or one at a venue that has requirements for modesty, such as a church, dresses with a removable layer with sleeves may be a perfect alternative to the traditional shrug or jacket.  A simple, elegant over dress with sleeves slips on over a cute short dress.  Then, as the dancing begins, and the night is young, the outer dress is removed to reveal a short, fun, comfortable dress for moving and grooving.  And you can even add a little extra splash by using a printed fabric, a brighter color or a fun detail on the under dress.

A convertible dress doesn’t have to change throughout the evening either.  Maybe it just changes when you wear it again.  A dress made of a satin Lycra material with long ties can be wrapped in a multitude of different ways to create a whole new look every time you wear it.  If you choose a style like this, it allows each girl to tie it in her own unique way.  Or, maybe they all tie them the same way for the ceremony, and then make a change for the reception.
